Local committee: Hein Roelfsema (U.S.E.) and Leendert de Bell (HU)
Theme: Migration, Inclusion, and Entrepreneurship

Conflict is increasingly driving relocation in search of a better life. In Europe, the focus is on conflict in the Middle East and especially Syria, and very recently in Ukraine. But as the large majority of refugees remains in the region of the conflict, refugees and migration flows are also very important in shaping realities in developing countries. Although many refugees initially see relocation as temporary, in practice many of them stay in the host country for a long period of time and often struggle to integrate in the labor market. Out of necessity, but increasingly also through the acquisition of new capabilities, many of them turn to entrepreneurship, not only as a source of income, but also as a source of social capital and integration.

During this seminar, we take stock of academic and applied research in the field of migrant/refugee entrepreneurship and inclusive entrepreneurship. Potential contributors are invited to submit proposals, such as:

  1. Academic papers that discuss international migration, labor market entry, and entrepreneurship with a specific focus on refugees and conflict;
  2. (Extended) abstracts and presentations of policy studies in this field;
  3. Presentations on entrepreneurial support projects,  to which universities, universities of applied science and/or centers for entrepreneurship have contributed.

The seminar will be organized by the Utrecht University of School of Economics (U.S.E.). Together with the Hogeschool Utrecht (HU) and the municipality of Utrecht, it has worked on Plan Einstein, which is seen as a flagship European project on refugee support.

Please provide proposals on Monday May 16 at the latest. You will be notified about acceptance (or not) within two weeks after the deadline. You can submit your proposal through this online form.
